Kindred Connection Program Start-Up Process 

1. Create a Board of Directors
   You will need to have a formal structure of governance for your Kindred. A minimum of three unrelated Directors must be selected. The titles you choose to use are up to you, but the roles of President, Secretary, and Treasurer must be filled. Your bylaws will define the titles and roles they fill. You can find the definitions of these roles online and the Kindred Chair can help you with this as well. At least one member of your board must be familiar with Awaken the North’s (AtN) mission, vision, bylaws and code of conduct.

2. Develop Bylaws
   Bylaws describe and govern your Kindred. They detail the board’s structure, purpose, and roles. They set forth the Kindred’s rules of operation. Your board must formally adopt your bylaws. Your bylaws should reflect the values, mission, and vision of AtN. You will need to have a signed copy for you application for affiliation with Awaken the North. The Kindred Chair can help you develop your bylaws.

3. Develop Articles of Incorporation
   You will need to incorporate your Kindred with your home state. Your legal name can be anything of your choosing but shall not include any form of Awaken the North, or AtN. Each state has their own requirements for incorporation, and you may need to consult with a professional for legal advice. The Kindred Chair can give non-legal advice. You will need to have a copy of your Articles of Incorporation for your application for affiliation.

4. Obtain Federal Employment Identification Number (EIN)
   This can be done online and is typically simple and quick. You will need to obtain your EIN by filing a Federal Form SS-4. You will need to save a PDF copy of this for your records and for your application of affiliation.

5. Apply for Associated or Affiliated Kindred Status
   You have already been working with the Kindred Chair up to this point – now it is time to formally apply for affiliation. The Kindred Chair will provide you with the details and list of documents required. Based on the recommendation of the Kindred Chair, the AtN Council will vote on your affiliation. The council will review your bylaws, code of conduct, board members and the overall intent of your kindred.

Once you are approved you will need to execute the affiliation agreement. The Kindred Chair will coordinate this. The agreement will be signed by your kindred representative and the AtN president. Once the agreement has been signed, you will receive your welcome package that will contain detailed information on what to do from here.
